Preserve the Freshness of Various Fruits

Apple

If stored in the refrigerator, apples will stay crispy for 3 to 4 weeks, but if left in a cool place, they will only last for about 1 week. A small tip is to put the apples in a plastic bag before putting them in the refrigerator, as the ethylene gas produced by the apples will cause other fruits, especially lettuce, to turn brown.

Avocado

Avocado will ripen within 1 week if stored at room temperature. When the avocado is ripe (feels soft to the touch), you can transfer it to the refrigerator to keep it fresh for a few more weeks.

But what if you buy unripe avocados and need to use them right away? A little tip is to put the avocado in a paper bag with a banana. Within a day, the ethylene gas from the banana will naturally ripen the avocado and make it delicious.

Oranges

Refrigeration will keep oranges fresh for 2 weeks, while at room temperature, oranges will only stay fresh for 7-10 days. Because of their thick skin, oranges can last longer than other fruits.

Grapes

Grapes stored in a plastic bag placed in the refrigerator will keep for about 2 weeks. Since grapes have a coating, you should only wash them when you are ready to eat them!

Pears

At room temperature, unripe pears can be stored for about 5 days. When ripe, you can put them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh for another week. You can speed up the ripening process by putting them in a paper bag and keeping them in a cool place.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes should be kept in a dry, cool place. They are best eaten within 1 week from when they are soft and fragrant. Tomatoes should not be stored in the refrigerator as the temperature will make them lose their flavor. You should also avoid putting them in plastic bags, especially in the summer, as it will make the tomatoes ripen faster and if you are not careful, they can become watery and moldy.

Root Vegetables

Root vegetables such as onions, potatoes… should be stored in a cool, well-ventilated place, ideally in a basket placed away from the kitchen.

Most root vegetables can be stored for 1 month, except for baby potatoes which should be used within 10 days. One thing to note is that you should keep them away from sunlight, as sunlight can make the root vegetables sprout and turn green, becoming toxic.
